So You Want to Help an Indie Author? Here’s How.

Last week I talked about the magic of indie author collaborations—newsletter swaps, author friendships, mutual moaning sessions (essential), and reading each other’s books.
This week, it’s over to you, lovely reader.
Because behind every indie author is… well, no PR team, no hefty ad budget, and no publishing house waving our book under everyone’s nose. Just us. Typing away, hoping the words will reach someone who cares.
If you’ve ever wondered how to support an indie author (and we love you for wondering), here are a few simple ways that make a world of difference:
1. Say Yes to the Book
We know—we’re not household names (yet). But if an indie author pops up in your feed or your inbox with a book that sounds even slightly intriguing, take a chance. Download the sample. Read the blurb. Say yes.
You might just discover a new favourite author. And you'll 100% make our day.
2. Leave That Glorious Review
“I’ll definitely leave a review” is music to an author’s ears.
But we know life happens, emails pile up, and before you know it, that promise is just a fond memory. If you’ve enjoyed a book, please, please take two minutes to post even a short review. Just a sentence or two on Amazon, Goodreads, or wherever you bought it.
Seriously. Reviews = visibility = book sales = an author doing a happy dance in their kitchen.
3. Share the Love
If you liked the book, don’t keep it to yourself! Post about it on your socials, text your book club, tell your sister, your cat, your postman (okay, maybe not the cat).
Even one Instagram story or a quick mention in a Facebook group can mean new readers finding us. Word of mouth is indie gold.
4. Follow and Engage
We don’t just post pretty book pics for the fun of it (well… sometimes we do). Every like, comment, share or follow helps boost our visibility.
So if you’re into Bookstagram, TikTok, or just love a behind-the-scenes look at writing life, follow your favourite indie authors and say hi. We love chatting with readers.
5. Subscribe to Newsletters
Okay, I know. Another newsletter? But hear me out—ours are different (promise). No spam. No endless promo. Just updates, sneak peeks, freebies, giveaways, and the occasional “I just wrote a chapter that made me cry” moment.
Joining an author’s mailing list means you’ll never miss a release—and you’ll be part of the small but mighty squad that keeps indie books alive.
And Finally…
Take a chance on the unknown. Indie authors are writing bold, beautiful, risky, heart-wrenching stories that sometimes don’t fit into neat little publishing boxes. We’re experimenting. We’re passionate. We’re stubborn as heck.
And we’re writing for you.
So if you’ve read and loved an indie book recently—thank you. And if you’ve yet to dip your toe in, now’s the perfect time.
Because behind every indie novel is an author who’s dreaming big—and readers like you are the ones who help make those dreams real.
